of India Act, 1935 as the governing document of India on 26th Jan
1950. The date of 26 Jan was chosen to honour the declaration of Independence

it did not yet have a permanent constitution; instead it’s laws were based on
the modified colonial Government of India Act 1935 and the country was a
Dominion. On 28th Aug 1947, the Drafting Committee was appointed to draft a permanent
constitution, with Dr. B. R Ambedkar as chairman. And then the day came 26th
Jan 1950, the republic day of our country when our own constitution came into
force.
